Quite a few ranchers are also pilots who use area landmarks to navigate, including the V-bar-V brand painted on the barn roof of this place nestled in Sandhills. The Vinton family includes fifth-generation ranchers adapting to climate and market changes as they steward the land.
In a few days, I’ll be among the cyclists pedaling through the Sandhills as part of the 39th Bike Ride Across Nebraska. Seeing distinctive landscapes from a bike saddle allows you to easily stop for a closer look or a more attentive listen. I’m eager to hear the meadowlarks singing as we ride past. And I hope to hear some stories from our small-town hosts as they welcome us into their communities for a short visit.
